Operation Wallacea is a tropical conservation research organization operating in remote locations across the world covering a range of habitats including coral reefs, rain and cloud forests, deserts, African Bush, Amazonian river systems and wetlands. These expeditions are designed with specific wildlife conservation aims in mind - from identifying areas needing protection, through to implementing and assessing conservation management programmes.

Operation Wallacea involves large teams of university academics, who are specialists in various aspects of biodiversity or social and economic studies, concentrated at the target study site giving onsite volunteers the opportunity of working on a range of projects, gaining first hand experience of tropical field research, or gathering their own data for a thesis project. Course credit is available through the University of St Andrews in Scotland which operates an optional “Tropical Research and Field Study” module.

The expeditions are now operating in 8 countries: Indonesia, Honduras, Egypt, Cuba, South Africa, Mozambique, Madagascar and Peru. Expeditions are from 2 to 10 weeks in duration and can include studies as diverse as primate behavior, reef fish abundance, herpetofauna ecology, social development studies, genetic biodiversity, scientific SCUBA diving training and many more.
